The Avishai Cohen Masterclass is an in-depth video interview hosted by DDB Founder, Geoff Chalmers. Over two and half hours of discussion, they unpack the music and double bass techniques of this legendary bassist, composer and bandleader. The Masterclass covers a range of topics, including what Avishai learnt as a member of The Chick Corea New Trio and as co-founder of Corea's ensemble, Origin, as well as his time performing and recording with other renowned artists. In addition, they discuss Avishai Cohen's personal approach to double bass technique, improvisation, playing in a piano trio, phrasing, bass practice, rhythm, equipment, and much more!

Avishai Cohen is a celebrated bassist whose illustrious career has seen him perform & record with many of the jazz and Latin music world's most renowned musicians. These include Chick Corea, Danilo Pérez, Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove and many more. As a composer and bandleader, Avishai is known for groundbreaking albums, such as the 2008 masterpiece "Gently Disturbed" & compositions, including "Remembering".


 

From Avishai Cohen's signature bass techniques to his unique approach to improvisation, we delve into the music of one of the bass world's most revered artists.

What topics are covered in this Masterclass?


Session One
: We start our discussion by looking back to Avishai Cohen's origins story, his key influences, the experience of learning from and playing alongside musical legends in 90's New York, his practice routine and how he was able to make so much progress in those formative years.

Session Two: We discuss various topics, including Avishai's approach to sound production, right hand technique, the duo and trio format, key Latin and jazz influences.

Session Three: In this session, we continue our deep dive into Avishai's personal approach to double bass technique with a discussion around left hand technique and how to make your bass lines and solos sing.

Session Four: We cover improvisation, rhythm, recording, bass gear and more.

Session Five: We round out the Masterclass by looking at the creative process, as well as a very special solo bass improvisation.
