What is The Anders Jormin Masterclass?

The Anders Jormin Masterclass is an in-depth video interview hosted by DDB Founder, Geoff Chalmers. Over four hours of discussion and musical demonstrations, they unpack the music and double bass techniques of this legendary bassist, composer and bandleader.

The Masterclass covers a range of topics, including left and right hand technique, intonation, the art of interplay, playing in challenging keys and unlocking the fingerboard, Anders's three-step approach to improvisation, melodicism, rhythm and odd meters, solo arrangements, extended techniques, key musical influences, studying with NHØP, bass gear and much more. Anders shares a lot of information in these videos, so you will have plenty practise and bring into your own playing.

This Masterclass is designed with bass players in mind to replicate the experience of taking an in-person masterclass or workshop with Anders Jormin.

Known for his 40 year musical partnership with Bobo Stenson, he has also performed with numerous legendary artists such as, Charles Lloyd, Tomasz Stańko, Elvin Jones, Don Cherry, Lee Konitz, Joe Henderson, Paul Motian, Norma Winstone and Kenny Wheeler.
 

From Anders Jormin's approach to improvisation, to his use of extended techniques, we delve deep into the music of one of the bass world's most revered artists.

What topics are covered in this Masterclass?


Session One – Origins Story
: After a short solo performance, we start our discussion by exploring Anders Jormin's key influences and what he studied in those formative years, including traditional Swedish folk melodies and his use of extended techniques.

Session Two – The Scandinavian Greats: In this session, we continue our deep dive into Anders's experiences with some of the giants of the Scandinavian bass world and how they influenced his approach to improvisation.

Session Three – Talking Technique: We cover Anders's left hand technique, extended techniques, harmonics, arranging for solo double bass and much more.

Session Four – Advanced Techniques and Fingerboard Mastery: We continue our discussion of Anders's personal approach to the double bass, covering right hand technique, tone production, thumb position and shifting.

Session Five – The Art of Melodicism: This next session focuses on Anders's incredible ability to create and play melodies, including how to practice, his melodic language, playing in odd meters, fast tempos, group improvisation and much more.

Session Six – Solo Performances: We take time out for two intimate and virtuosic solo performances. The full transcriptions are provided.

Session Seven – Bass Gear: We round off the Masterclass by getting to know Anders's bass gear, set up, amplification methods and more.
